Adjunct - Writing

Department: Dept of English & Appl Linguistics
Location: Honolulu, HI
Job Summary:

Provide in-person classroom instruction in undergraduate writing courses offered by the English Program (for example, WRI 1050, 1100, and 1200). Develop a syllabus and assignments that meet course objectives, conference with students, maintain records on and evaluate student performance. This is a part-time position with per course compensation.

Compensation:
$1,050 per credit - Masters candidates

$1,150 per credit - Doctorate candidates

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.A. in English or related field or M.F.A. in Creative Writing. Degree must be granted by institutions accredited by one of the six regional accrediting agencies in the United States or from another country by the Ministry of Education or comparable body in that country.
  • Experience teaching writing at the secondary or college level.
  • Residence on Oahu during the course term.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in English or related field.
  • Experience teaching writing at the college level.
  • Strong teaching evaluations.

Other Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary.
  • This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

  1. Develop syllabi in line with model syllabi, assigned textbooks, and department, college, and university policies (8%)
  2. Prepare individual classes; maintain records of student progress and assign grades (72%)
  3. Hold office hours and respond to student questions (1 hour/course) (12%)
  4. Participate in training sessions (3%)
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
    • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
