Job Summary:
Hawai`i Pacific University’s (HPU) Physician Assistant (PA) program is seeking motivated Adjunct Faculty to assist with curriculum delivery for the Master of Medical Science-Physician Assistant Program.

PA Program Adjunct Faculty will report directly to the Program Director and works collaboratively with the core faculty team to develop and deliver quality PA education that meets program competencies, program learning outcomes, and ARC-PA accreditation standards. This includes educational components for the didactic and clinical phase of the program. Adjunct faculty will be assigned to duties based on program need and alignment with the clinical expertise and skill of the adjunct faculty member. Depending on job duties, adjunct faculty may be required to travel and stay in Honolulu for student immersion session for assigned activities, and/or to represent the HPU PA program in carrying out clinical site recruitment and site visits. Travel for site visits is throughout the U.S.

Compensation ($1,500 per credit) is provided based on credit-hour equivalence (1 credit=15 hours) for time spent carrying out adjunct faculty responsibilities outlined below. If travel is required by the program and adjunct teaching duties, all approved travel-related expenses will be covered by HPU in accordance with HPU’s Travel Policy.

Qualifications:

• Degree from an accredited physician assistant program, OR a U.S. accredited medical school, OR a terminal degree in an area of medical science (e.g. PhD, ScD)
• One year of experience in clinical practice OR one year of teaching experience in PA or medical school (includes teaching in PA or medical residency/fellowship programs)
• (If a PA) Current NCCPA certification, OR (if a physician) current board certification
• Ability to work a schedule that reflects regular business hours in the Hawaii time zone

Other Qualifications:

• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
• Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
• Must have reliable computer technology and wi-fi to record asynchronous lectures and to participate in synchronous sessions.
• Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
• Must have reliable transportation to facilitate travel to HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes access to an airport with regular flights to Honolulu.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
1. The faculty member holds an adjunct appointment and has responsibilities consistent with the mission, vision, values, and goals of the PA program. The adjunct faculty primary responsibility may vary in relation to being assigned to didactic or clinical education duties. Adjuncts must demonstrate competence in helping the program meet ARC-PA Accreditation standards respective to assigned job functions. Specific job functions may include (job duties will vary based on course work adjunct role is being hired for (95%):

• Carry out duties as a course director or assist the course director in all course related activities as directed by the Director of Didactic Education (DDE) or Director of Clinical Education (DCE), to include:
  • Assist with development of course syllabi to include establishing appropriate student learning outcomes and course activities
  • Development and delivery of course material as it aligns with the adjunct faculty area of clinical expertise
  • Contribute to case development and/or case review for team-based/problem-based learning activities
  • Assist with the development of course assessments and other assignments
  • Meet deadlines and follow directions of the course director, and/or DDE or DCE
  • Plan and deliver individual classes via distance education or face to face instruction that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
• Module instructor for clinical medicine course topics as assigned by the DDE
• Small group facilitator for team-based/problem-based learning activities
• Clinical skills instructor for immersion activities (physical exam lab, clinical skills, and/or grader/review for practical assessments and/or OSCEs)
• Carry out initial and routine site visits to ensure quality experiences for students and that clinical sites meet ARC-PA Accreditation standards for clinical education
• Attend faculty meetings as needed
• Serve as an interviewer for PA candidate admissions
• Perform all duties above in manner that aligns with and upholds the PA Program mission, vision, and values

2. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)

• Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties by the Program Director, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
• Assists with seasonal peaks.
